DESCRIPTION:

When ten percent of the population of San Antonio had died of contagious diseases, the mayor begged for help. The Incarnate Word Sisters responded by founding the first public hospital, Santa Rosa, in 1869.

A global expert on “Hatred as a contagious and destructive disease,” Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, is being brought to San Antonio by the Sisters’ Office of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation. The Sisters try to carry forward their tradition as healers. Dr. Abuelaish’s experience and research have led to the creation of the Daughters for Life Foundation https://daughtersforlife.com/ which provides scholarships for young women of the Middle East. He believes that educated women assuming more leadership is crucial for building justice and peace, for healing the world.

Will you partner with the people listed below and support in some way the “Lift a Daughter---for Life” Benefit Dinner in CHRISTUS Heritage Hall at the Village at Incarnate Word, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 6:30 to 8:30 pm?

Join the San Antonio Delegation who attended the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Monterrey in September and were deeply inspired by Dr. Abuelaish. He has twenty Honorary Doctorates and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times. At the dinner, hear Dr. Abuelaish speak, enjoy delicious foods generously provided by Pasha Mediterranean Grill, Jerusalem Grill, and Zaatar Lebanese Grill.  This is an opportunity to buy his book which has been translated into 23 languages, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity.  (On Wednesday, 5:30 pm, the Executive Book Review hosts him speaking on the book.  See  https://executivebookreview.com/)

Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Laureate, wrote, "This story is a necessary lesson against hatred and revenge."

Dr. Abuelaish is a Palestinian Canadian physician serving as a Professor in the Global Health Division - Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. He was raised in Jabalia Refugee Camp in the Gaza strip and was determined to be a healer. He got a medical degree, worked and was respected in both Israeli hospitals and those in Gaza. Dr. Abuelaish experienced the overwhelming tragedy of his three daughters and niece being killed in Gaza.  His response has been “I shall not hate.”

Be a part of this benefit dinner, joining those in San Antonio who believe that love is stronger than hate. Compassion and education are the paths to flourishing for all. See below for ways to support.

The Justice, Peace, and Creation Office of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word who are bringing Dr. Abuelaish thank you for considering this.  We are grateful to the many educators, healers, and kind people partnering as Dr. Abuelaish presents from Feb. 17 to 20, including the Peace Center at Northwest Vista College, and the Raindrop Foundation. We are grateful that our tradition of healing is carried forward by health professions at the University of the Incarnate Word: Feik School of Pharmacy, Illa Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, the Rosenberg School of Optometry, the School of Osteopathic Medicine, and the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, and by the CHRISTUS Health System.
