Green Spaces Alliance

About

The mission of Green Spaces Alliance (GSA) is to sustain the natural environment and enhance urban spaces through land conservation, community engagement, and education.

GSA enacts this mission mainly through its three programs: GSA was founded as a land trust in 1998, and its first program is Land Conservation. Through a legal tool called conservation easements, GSA helps willing landowners ensure their land will never be developed or parceled to multiple buyers. Primarily, GSA helps secure and manage conservation easements through the City of San Antonio's Edwards Aquifer Protection Program (EAPP), which was created to ensure the long-term quality and quantity of San Antonio's water supply from the Edwards Aquifer. San Antonio residents voted to support the EAPP in 2005, 2010, and 2015 with a 1/8cent sales tax.

In 2002, GSA added a youth photography program, Picture Your World, which engages youth with their outdoors natural environment through photography workshops. Weekend workshops are held once per month Sept-April on a Sunday afternoon. All youth aged 8-18 are welcome, and each workshop is held at a different natural area around San Antonio. The elementary program provides this experience to two Title 1 schools, which lack enough arts and fieldtrip funding to organize these activities themselves. Often, these students would otherwise not have much opportunity to have these experiences.

In 2006, GSA launched the Community Gardens Program. Today, GSA supports nearly 50 gardens in its network across San Antonio. To learn more about each of our programs, visit www.greensatx.org.
