Community Service Learning (CSL)

About

Service learning is a structured learning experience that combines community service with mentorship, preparation and reflection. Students provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and learn about the context in which illness develops, the connection between their service and their academic coursework, and their roles as citizens and professionals. In support of our UT Health San Antonio's service mission, students use what they learn both inside and outside the classroom to empower medically underserved communities in San Antonio, South Texas and around the globe. The Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics’ Community Service Learning (CSL) Program provides a structure to engage faculty, staff and institutional support of these activities. Melanie Stone, MPH, MEd, has directed the CSL program since its inception in 2008 and Jacqueline Tovar serves as the program coordinator. The CSL program offers a competitive mini/midi grant application cycle twice a year (fall and spring), year-round trainings (workshops and lectures) through the Build Your Community Engaged Toolkit, a directory of CSL projects, and an annual conference where the CSL projects are presented through a poster session.
