Adopt-A-Grandparent volunteers provide one-on-one or group companionship to senior citizens living in nursing homes, adult communities, and private residences in the Charlottesville community. Weekly activities include participating in meaningful conversations, playing bingo/trivia, assisting with arts and crafts, or facilitating other games with the residents. Volunteers are not allowed to provide any sort of medical care for the grandparents. We currently serve 15 sites, reaching roughly 150 community members in 2021. The expected time commitment is one hour per week for volunteers. Volunteering in the fall 2021 semester will be in-person at most sites -- vaccination documentation required. Every site is different, but expect to participate in mandatory orientation/training before volunteering. Your site will likely have a carpool set up to provide all volunteers with transportation to and from grounds. While we are in the process of connecting with more facilities around Charlottesville (yay!), please keep in mind this program takes new volunteers on a first-come, first-serve basis.
